So, you have a brand new iPhone 3G or 3GS, you live in Mexico and you wish that you can share the internet connection with your computer. You will notice that’s impossible, although the iPhone has the capability to do that, Telcel decided not to offer that feature and blocked it.
There are two ways to accomplish this task, pay a lot of money or not. So I’m going to show you the second option. Before doing something, please make sure that you update your iPhone to 3.1.2. You will NOT loose any information already in your iPhone.
Task:
- Tether on an iPhone 3G or 3GS and Telcel. (iPhone OS 3.1.2)
**UPDATE (do NOT upgrade to 3.1.3 check: here for updates)**
Materials and requirements:
- iPhone 3G, 3GS running OS 3.1.2
- Computer (Mac or PC) <- PC sucks!
- Internet connection
- USB to iPhone connector
- Telcel UNLIMITED internet plan. (unless you want to be charged a lot of money)
Quick Steps:
- Jailbreak the iPhone
- Unlock the phone for tethering capability
- Select Telcel to activate tethering
- Activate Tethering
To Jailbreak the iPhone:
- Download BlackRa1n from here. You will have to select your OS, the file is very small.
- Connect your iPhone to your computer.
- Run the file you downloaded (blackra1n.exe or blackra1n.zip), You should see this.
- Hit the “make it ra1n” button. Almost immediately the iPhone will reset. The process will take up to 2 minutes. Do not disconnect!
- Once your iPhone has fully reboot, you will have a jailbroken iPhone.
To Unlock the phone for tethering capability:
- On the iPhone, click on the blackra1n app.
- Tap on the label that reads “sn0w“.
- Click on the “Install” button on your up right corner. This will enable the iPhone to work on any carrier (Telcel, Movistar, etc) and the possibility to tether.
To Use Telcel:
- Open Safari in your iPhone.
- Type http://www.iphone-notes.de/mobileconfig/.
On the Carrier drop down menu, select MX Telcel. You do not have to provide an e-mail address nor any other info.- Click on the Download button.
- After a few seconds, the iPhone will run the new download file and will redirect you to a new view. In this view you will be asked to install a new profile to enable tethering, tap the install button.
- You have now tethering available in your iPhone 3G or 3GS.
To Activate Tethering:
- Go to Settings.
- Tap on General.
- Click on Network.
- There should be an Internet Tethering option now.
- Turn on Tethering, you will be asked if you want to use USB or Bluetooth, use the one you like.
- Return home on the iPhone and you should see that Tethering is on.
- After a few seconds you will have internet connection on your computer through your iPhone.

Great post, good to se Telcel can be “hacked”, I have a question though, if you jailbreak the phone, can you reset it its original state?
Yes, you can always delete the blackra1n app from your iPhone, also you can reset it to factory settings. Use this link to restore.

You don’t need unlimited internet access. Telcel charges you for every byte you download using your iPhone, so if you don’t have unlimited internet plan, the bill is going to be way higher using tethering. I advice you caution if you don’t have unlimited internet plan.

I have a 3GS iphone jailbroked and I just downloaded MyWi from Cydia, it works at amazing velocities but I am still worry that TELCEL will bill me extraordinary charges, I am in an unlimited internet Plan with Telcel. Can they track you down??

Hi Juan, I’m sure they can track you down. The thing is that they probably don’t do it because they don’t have any rules on what is inappropriate usage of the unlimited internet plan. I advice you to read your contract with them and evaluate your internet usage from there. Still, I don’t think you should be worried on getting caught, but as I wrote on the post, use it at your own risk, stay informed on your options and don’t abuse the system.
